  ROLE OF NGOs IN CONSUMER PROTECTION

NGOs (NON GOVERENMENT ORGANISATIONS) and consumer organizations are crucial in ensuring that consumers are protected. These organizations inform customers of their rights and compel them to protest against unfair and exploitative business practices. They assist consumers with legal issues and submit complaints on their behalf. In the public’s interest, they also file cases in the consumer courts. Let us have a look at some of the functions performed by the NGOs to help the consumers:-

  • NGOs offer support to the consumer movement. Through seminars, workshops, and training programs they raise public awareness of consumer rights and educate the public about consumer problems and solutions.
  • They offer consumers legal aid by assisting them in pursuing a legal remedy.
  • As representative members of consumer protection councils and other official boards, they engage in consumer advocacy.
  • NGOs conduct testing of consumer goods using authorized laboratories or their own testing equipment in order to assess the qualities of the products of various competing brands and publish the test findings for the benefit of customers so they can make educated purchasing decisions.
  • They publish periodicals and publications to inform readers about consumer issues, legal developments, and other developing topics of interest. .
  • They offer their suggestions and support to the govt while policies regarding consumer protection are being developed.
  • NGOs file public interest litigation (PIL) to uphold consumer rights.
